About the Workshop

With the expansion of mining activities and the rapid construction of rope ways across India under the Government’s Parvatmala Scheme, the role of steel wire ropes has become indispensable for safe, efficient operations in mining and aerial transportation. Ropeways are now being built in diverse terrains across the country, providing critical access to remote areas and supporting material transport in mining sites. This growth underscores the need for robust Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) practices to ensure the integrity and longevity of steel wire ropes.

Advanced NDE techniques not only improve operational safety but also support the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by fostering self-reliance in the maintenance and inspection of essential infrastructure. Establishing indigenous standards and best practices in wire rope NDE is a step toward achieving self-sufficiency in this sector. In response to these emerging needs, the CSIR-CIMFR, in collaboration with ASNT INDIA, is organizing a one-day workshop titled “Advances in Non-Destructive Evaluation of Steel Wire Ropes in Mining and Aerial Installations: Theory and Practices”, scheduled on 10th January 2025.

This event will provide industry experts, researchers, and practitioners with a platform to explore recent advancements, hands-on demonstrations, and the latest standards in steel wire rope inspection. The workshop will also emphasize the role of NDE in supporting India's progress in safe and sustainable ropeway and mining operations.

Topics Covered

  • Overview of NDE techniques for steel wire ropes in mining and aerial installations.
  • Practical demonstrations of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), Ultrasonic Testing.
  • Case studies on NDE applications in real world mining and ropeway installations.
  • Best practices for interpreting NDE data to predict rope lifespan and ensure operational safety.
  • Discussion on relevant national and international standards for NDE of steel wire ropes
  • Future trends in NDE technology for mining and aerial installations.
