Summary of Major Changes in ASNT Recommended Practice SNT TC 1A 2024 edition

Recently ASNT has released 2024 edition of SNT TC 1A - Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive testing

Following are the summary of major changes when compared to previous editions 2020.

  1. Paragraph 1.5 was removed.

  2. Paragraphs 2.1.7 and 2.1.11 were updated to better define the terms “Detection Rate” and “False Call” to ensure their precise application.

  3. Paragraphs 2.1.15 and 2.1.18 were revised to further elucidate the term “Predictive Maintenance”. Additionally, to contrast with the term “NDT”, the definition of “Non-Destructive Testing” was included in accordance with ASTM E1316.

  4. The text in parentheses in paragraph 2.1.21 was amended to read: “This is usually done before any NDT is performed when there are concerns regarding the performance of the NDT or the instrument’s response.”

  5. In Table 6.3.1B, interpretations for digital radiography (RD), computed radiography (CR), and computed tomography (CT) were incorporated.

  6. Paragraph 6.4 was added to recognize a percentage of direct practical experience in terms of laboratory hours that may apply to the extended experience recommendations in Tables 6.3.1A and 6.3.1B. This recommendation applies only to training programs in educational institutions or schools.

  7. In paragraph 8.1.2, a recommendation was included to ensure that staff administering multiple-choice examinations are adequately trained and that this training is documented.

  8. Paragraph 8.1.4 was revised, and paragraphs 8.6.4.2 and 8.6.4.3 were added to recommend a Level I NDT practical test for personnel who actually perform NDT as part of their job function.

  9. In paragraph 8.1.7, a recommendation was added to document the acceptance of an external provider for examination services.

  10. In paragraphs 8.2.1 and 8.2.1.1, restrictions were placed on the use of eye drops to temporarily enhance vision. This and related issues are under review by a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Committee, with additional changes anticipated in the future, including more details on eye drops.

  11. References to CP-105 for general and specific examinations were added in paragraphs 8.3 and 8.4.

  12. In paragraphs 8.3.2 and 8.4.1, references to CP-105 for general and specific examinations were included.

  13. In Table 8.3.3, interpretations of digital radiography (RD), computed radiography (CR), and computed tomography (CT) were added concerning the number of questions in the exam.

  14. In paragraphs 8.3.4, 8.4.4, 8.5.6, 8.6.3.2, 8.6.4.2, and 8.6.5, the new ASNT 9712 program was added. The ACCP remains in place as it is now an employer-based certification program.

  15. Paragraphs 8.3.4, 8.4.4, 8.5.6, 8.6.3.2, and 8.6.4.3 were reorganized as part of an audit-based Section 8 review of the ASNT 9712 program.
