John Abraham Muliyil Memorial Lecture

To stimulate aspirant engineers interested in welding and allied processes, the John A. Muliyil Memorial Lecture Award will be given to a young professional below 35-years of age, who has presented his paper during the National Welding Meet of the Institute on welding technology or a related subject (in alternate years). His/her work (theses, research reports, state-of-the-art surveys) must be authored by one person only and based on recent work carried out in an industry.

 

Mr. Muliyil’s entry into the field of welding was in 1947 when, after his graduation and a short stint in the Indian army, he joined Indian Oxygen Ltd., the pioneers in welding inIndia. After intensive training in the art and science of welding, he was part of a team entrusted with the task of helping the fabrication and engineering industry in India to tackle problems in their welding and allied operations.

 

These were the years when Independent India had launched on its ambitious plans for modernization of Indian  industry. Welding technology in the country was still in its infancy. He was deeply involved in the introduction of  TIG and MIG welding processes and many automatic welding installations, modern cutting machines, and a range of new consumables in those early years. He held many important management positions in Indian Oxygen Ltd until his retirement in 1984. For formulating welding standards and specifications, he has worked for many years in panels and committees of Indian Standards Institution, presently known as Bureau of Indian Standards.

 

He was a Founder-Member of The Indian Institute of Welding and worked in various capacities for the development of the Institute. He was the Chairman, G.P. Committee and Vice President, before taking over as the President of the Institute during 1978-80.

 

He passed away in Mangalore, Karnataka on 1st October 2008 at the age of 84.

 

In memory of the Late John A. Muliyil’s enormous contribution for the development of welding science and technology in Indian industry, Members of his family, and his longtime friend and colleague in Indian Oxygen Ltd. Mr. S. V. Sambamurti, President (1984-86), IIW-India have instituted this award from 2022. This will be awarded in alternate years during the National Welding Seminar / International Congress / Conference of the Institute.

 

 

    Criteria

 

       1.      The person must be within 35-years of age at the time of nomination.

2.      The person must have clear and distinct understanding of the knowledge in welding.

3.      The person must have leadership qualities (both in workplace and in the community) in the field of welding science and technology.

4.      The person must have a clear projection on the future development of his knowledge.


    Evaluation Procedure

 

1.     1. Nominations are invited from individuals with recommendations from

a.    IIW-India Branch Managing Committee members

b.    Section Head / Division Head / Head of the Institution at which the candidate is studying / working.

 

2. The Chairman, Technical Committee along with the Chairman, Young Professional & Student Activity, will evaluate the nominations for award.

3.      The evaluation committee shall be entitled to seek opinion from experts, if required.

4.     The nomination should highlight one or two of the most significant contributions of the candidate.

5.     The Joint Committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Council for approval.

6. Membership of The Indian Institute of Welding is not a necessary criterion to apply for the award. However, the awardee must be a Member of the Institute after the announcement of the Award.

 7. In case no suitable candidate is found in a particular year, the award need not be given on that year.

AWARD

The Winner of this award will receive a Certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000/-
