About the Workshop

Metals and alloys play a crucial role in manufacturing and construction because of their desirable quality and combination of properties. These metals extracted from their ores have a tendency to revert to the oxide form at the slightest opportunity. Whether it is for decorative purposes or reduce corrosion, these have to be prevented. There is an extensive technology involved in treating metal surfaces to modify their properties for various purposes including corrosion protection, improving paint adhesion, improved lubricity and modification of electrical properties.

Majority of the Engineering Industries perform surface protection of the components handled by them during the various stages of manufacturing cycle. There are conventional methods to protect the surface from being corroded. In the recent past, technological advancement in this field has also led to replacing some of the plating solutions like anodising, cadmium plating from the point of environment protection with chromic acid free anodisation. In order to perform all these activities in the industries, the personnel should have basic knowledge of electrochemistry, storage methods of materials, inspection methods and also need to know the current development in this field. Hence, IIM Bangalore Chapter has proposed to conduct 2 days’ workshop on various topics related to surface protection methods of metallic materials. The topics to be covered are electrochemistry principles, surface protection and preparation methods, recent advances in surface protection methodologies and the best practices in Chemical processing methods through NADCAP special processes.

The workshop covers an overview starting with key fundamentals in the field of electrochemistry, navigating through a focused range of topics of interest to a practicing professional, and especially attractive for students and young engineering professionals starting in the area of Corrosion and surface engineering. This program could lead to a follow up activity in the form of training, mentoring, consultancy for the different participants and a wide network of experts to continue interactions.

The target audience for this workshop are shopfloor personnel from Chemical Industries, Owners and users of Process shop facilities, Designers and practising engineers who deal with surface protection of metals and alloys. Students (undergraduate and post-graduates) and faculty members interested in the field of electro-chemistry, corrosion and surface modifications.

The faculties who handle the session are experts drawn from the Industries and R&D establishments who are the authority in their field.
