Seminar on "Advances in Welding & Surfacing of Materials" organised by IIW India, Chennai Branch

The Indian Institute of Welding
The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW-India), a representative body of welding professionals in India was founded on 22nd of Apri11966. It is involved in the advancement of welding science and technology within the country by disseminating development and knowledge in the field of welding and allied technology through seminars, workshops training programme etc., providing technical guidance and consultation to industries in welding, conducting associate membership examination and awarding diploma and certificates to members and publishing technical journals and periodicals in the field of welding. IIW-India has been recognized as an Autho-rised National Body (ANB) to carry out certification programmes of the International Institute of Welding. IIW-India also conducts its own welder certification programme. Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGE&T), Government of India, Ministry of Labour & Employment has empanelled IIW-India as an "Assessing Body" for MES courses under Skill Development Initiative (SDI) Scheme for all courses under Fabrication Sectors in all States and Union Territories in India. IIW - India Celebrates its Golden Jubilee in 2016.
The Chennai Branch of IIW-India was founded on 17th January, 1973. It regularly organises seminars, conferences, workshops and courses for the welding community in the region. It organizes tailor made courses for welding industry at various levels ranging from welder to welding engineer based on specific requirements of the industry. It assists and jointly conducts in-house welding training programmes in industrial establishments covering both theoretical and practical skills. Some popular courses conducted by the Chennai Branch in recent years included "Welding Metallurgy and Technology for Engineers", "Fabrication of Welded Components", "Non-Destructive Inspection and Quality Assurance", "Metallurgical Aspects Related to Welding" and "Weld Defect Inspection and Quality Assurance"
The Theme
The theme for AWESUM 2016 is "ADVANCES IN WELDING & SURFACING OF MATERIALS" The structured liberalisation of the Indian economy, which has paved the way for globalisation of our industry, has had its impact on core sectors such as power, steel, oil, gas, petrochemical and transportation. Hence, there is an imperative need for the manufacturers to maximise their profits without compromising on quality and by lowering manufacturing time and costs. Since welding is the most widely used engineering manufacturing process, the welding industry is also poised for a vibrant change due to the need to introduce high productivity welding processes, cost effective designs and reliable quality control methods. Also, newer materials ranging from variations of existing metallic materials to ceramics and composites to nano-materials and others, which widely differ in their physical and mechanical properties, are being introduced for industrial use for extended life of the components. The welding of these materials poses technological challenges in welding fabrication, leading to development of superior welding processes and quality assurance criteria. Also, the need to sustain trained manpower has become a key factor to maintain the competitive edge. The objective of AWESUM 2016 is to provide a dynamic forum for professionals of Industries, Academia and Research institutes to share and enhance their knowledge base in Welding Science and Technology, and use the forum for fulfilling the missions of their organisations.
