  Metallurgy, Materials and Welding

The Indian Institute of Welding IIW India is a non-profit professional body to promote and enhance competence of welding industry and practicing welding professionals in India. Established in 1966, with its registered office at Kolkata, IIW has over 4500 welding professionals and more than 300 industries as corporate members who are contributing their expertise for the development of welding fraternity. IIW India has also endeavored to bring academia, researcher and industry from all over the country to discuss various facts of welding science and technology to support the growth and modern competitiveness of Indian industries.

From the year 2007, IIW India became an Authorised National Body (ANB) of International Instituteof Welding for education, Welding training, qualification and certification programmes of welding professionals in India, thus promoting qualitywelded product and improvements in the quality  of  life of the people.

This year, IIW India is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year. As part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations, the Chennai Branch of IIW India is going to organize an Interschool National Level Quiz Competitions on 29th July at Kalpakkam. This programme is initiated as a part of our efforts to create awareness among the students about the role of materials science and welding in industrial andtechnological developments. Along with the Quiz Competition, a visit to various nuclear facilities at DAE complex in Kalpakkam will be also arranged on the previous day, i.e. on July 28, 2016.

Visit to Nuclear Facilities (Thursday, 28th July 2016)

In this visit, the students and escorts will be taken around the various nuclear facilities at DAE complex Kalpakkam namely Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) and Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) and state-of-the-art facilities for advanced research in materialsand welding technology. The visit to the various reactor sites and the exposure to the world class research facilities would be an enthralling experience for the budding students.

Quiz Programme (Friday, 29th July 2016) Rules

1.      The theme of the Quiz will be 'Metallurgy, Materials and Welding'

2.      Each team shall be represented by two students only.

3.      A maximum of two teams shall strictly be allowed per IIW Branch.

4.      Only one escort per branch is required to accompany team.

5.      The teams are required to register along with their escort on before 2nd July 2016. Confirmation of registration will be sent to the participating teams. It is important to note that the local hospitality will be extended only to teams and escorts who have the confirmation of registration.

6.      All the branches/ schools (whichever is applicable) are requested to send their participants/ escort's names and travel itinerary not later than 20th July 2016.

The preliminary rounds will be held in parallel sessions and the winner and the runners- up teams from each session shall be chosen for the semifinals. Teams chosen from the two semifinal sessions shall contest the Grand Finale.
Quiz Awards
The winners and runners-up of quiz will receive the cash prize, of Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively, and certificates at the National Welding Seminar (NWS) to be held at Kolkata. In addition, the winners and the runners-up of the quiz programme will also receive trophy of excellence by IIW Chennai Branch.
Accommodation and local transport
IIW Chennai Branch would take care of the accommodation, local hospitality which includes pick-up and drop to and from Chennai railway station/airport for the registered participants and their escort. Teams are expected to arrive not earlier than the evening of 27 July 2016 and depart not later than the morning of 30 July 2016.

Kalpakkam is a coastal township situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, at a distance of 75 km from Chennai and about 20 km from the famous archeological town of Mamallapuram.
