ABOUT ASM
ASM International formerly known as the American Society for Metals, was established in 1913 as a professional body of heat treaters. It has since evolved as an international professional body of material scientists, engineers, R&D professionals and academicians with the motto of collecting & disseminating knowledge on Materials and Processes. The worldwide network of more than 38,000 individuals is led by members, guided by members’ needs and fueled by members’ participation. ASM offers excellent networking link, gives an instant access to wealth of information on materials & processes through its technical books, acclaimed handbooks, CD-ROMs etc. ASM International Bengaluru Chapter was formed in 2007 and has been conducting workshops/ seminars/ conferences regularly with the objective of providing Scientific, Engineering and Technical knowledge in the field of metallurgy and materials science for professional development in line with the mission of the Headquarters.

ABOUT BENGALURU CHAPTER
The Bengaluru chapter of ASM has been in existence for about 8 years. It has about 35 members drawn voluntarily from prominent Industries and Institutions in and around Bengaluru. The chapter is actively involved in conducting regular technical seminars and exhibitions on Heat treatment, Foundry, Forge, welding and other developments related to Materials & Processes at Bengaluru ,to update the professional and student community. The chapter is open to anyone in the relevant field becoming a member.

Introduction about the Speaker
Dr. T. S. Sudarshan, co-founder of Materials Modification Inc. (a company that emphasizes nanomaterials and coatings), originated and has served for the past 26 years as lead organizer for the series of international conferences on surface modification technologies. Dr. Sudarshan is active in the research, development and application of powders and coatings technology. His experience includes three years in the truck and bus division of Ashok Leyland, where he handled process control, heat treatment, quality assurance and failure analysis problems.

Dr. Sudarshan’s published writings include more than 175 papers and 30 books on surface modification technologies and two books on rapid solidification technology and intermetallic and ceramic coatings. Holder of 22 patents, Dr. Sudarshan is also co-editor of two major journals, Materials and Manufacturing Processes and Surface Engineering. He has taught courses worldwide in failure analysis, nanomaterials and surface engineering. He is a Fellow of ASM, Fellow of IFHTSE,, Fellow of IMMM, Distinguished Alumni of IITM past chairman of the Surface Engineering Division of ASM, past member of the National Materials Advisory Board and has served as an advisory member of the Advance Materials Research Institute at the University of New Orleans CREST center at Alabama State University and currently Trustee for ASM International.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The primary objective of this course is to provide a overview of all the available processes and treatments that can be used commercially for various substrates and applications. The course also covers discussion on vapor deposition processes, electroplating, ion and laser beam processes and numerous other surface hardening processes. Attendees will be able to have an appreciation at the end of the course of the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods and a real world appreciation for the available coatings and methods along with some typical applications. Design engineers, process engineers, sales engineers, manufacturing engineers, product development engineers and their managers will all benefit substantially from the basic principles and procedures to be presented in the course. Individuals having a basic degree in mechanical engineering or metallurgy/materials experience will also profit extensively from this information.
