The Conference brings together experts from industry, government, defence, academia, research and end users to examine and discuss the issues related to sustainability and value addition in metallurgical and allied industries that would have maximum impact on end-user industry, such as, Aerospace, Automobile, Power sector, etc. In the present global economic scenario, advances
in science and technology are expected to contribute significantly to global economic revival and its sustainability. Keeping this in mind as well as the interest of researchers and the industry, the Bangalore and Vijayanagar Chapters of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) are organizing a two-day conference and one day Techmart session entitled “Metallurgical Industries – Sustainability and Value Addition”.
• To provide a forum to facilitate interaction between the R & D experts and the captains of industry with the metallurgical equipment manufacturers.
• To disseminate current state of art practices and learn about the future trends in the industry which would make it sustainable in the future.
• To identify potential research and opportunity areas for researchers and industry.
• To learn about how the Indian companies are standing up to the global challenges of the future.
• To network for better future benefits.
The conference theme would be in broad area of “Metallurgical Industries – Sustainability and Value Addition” which will encompass the sub-themes like
• All processes related to iron making such as raw materials, sintering, pelletization, coke making, etc.
• All processes related to steel making (both primary and secondary processes)
• Heat treatment and surface coatings for improved wear/corrosion resistance for automotive/aerospace applications
• Processes related to manufacturing sectors both ferrous and non-ferrous
• Innovations in energy optimisation, environmental improvement and recycling related to ferrous and non-ferrous industries Invited talks would be given by eminent professionals and experts in the fields in addition to contributed papers. Further, there would be one session each dedicated to:
1. Developments in ferrous/non-ferrous industries
2. Addressing the sustainability issues like Adaptations & Improvements, Near-Zero Waste Processing, Policies, Incentives, Skills and HR issues
3. Value addition measures
The Indian Institute of Metals-Bangalore Chapter (IIM): The Indian Institute of Metals was conceived in 1945 and currently the membership exceeds ten thousand with fifty two chapters across the country. Most of the nation’s outstanding metallurgists and materials engineers have been associated with IIM in various capacities. The Bangalore Chapter, located in the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), is one of the leading Chapters of IIM, established in 1949.
The Department of Materials Engineering at IISc works in close association with the IIM Bangalore Chapter (IIM-BC) in all its technical activities supporting the metallurgists’ fraternity. The IIM-BC organizes many events like Workshops, Conferences including the prestigious Professor Brahm Prakash Memorial and Diamond Jubilee Lectures. It provides a platform for dissemination of knowledge and support to the industries. Further, it provides a bridge between the academia and industry. Complementing its efforts the Vijayanagar Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals has joined hands with IIM-BC in this event.
The Indian Institute of Metals Vijayanagar Chapter: The Indian Institute of Metals Vijayanagar Chapter was started in the year 2000 with major support from JSW Steel Limited. The Chapter was formed with an objective of providing a platform for interaction of plant personnel with metallurgists from various institutions and vice versa. The Chapter organises lectures by eminent professionals from Industry, Academia and Research Institutes. The Chapter is also a centre for AMIIM examinations. The Chapter has more than 100 student members at any given time from the neighbouring areas.
